Delta 8 THC
Delta 8 THC, which is short for Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that develops naturally on cannabis flowers, albeit in relatively low quantities. Fortunately, scientists can also create D8 in a laboratory out of cannabidiol (CBD) to maintain legal compliance and produce the cannabinoid at a commercial scale. Consequently, manufacturers can now infuse synthetic D8 into various hemp cannabinoid products or spray it onto smokable herbs to create federally legal THC-like consumable hemp goods.
What is Delta 8?
D8 is one of more than 100 cannabinoids that develops naturally in the cannabis plant. Importantly, the substance is slightly psychoactive, though not quite to the extent of Delta 9 THC, a marijuana-type cannabinoid. Be that as it may, its intoxicating effects and legal nature make Delta 8 products an incredibly popular purchase among medical and recreational hemp cannabis consumers.
Though the element generally develops in low quantities, scientists can synthesize it in a lab from cannabidiol, or CBD. This is great news for the legal hemp market because, according to the 2018 Farm Bill, any part of the cannabis plant – including its derivatives – is federally legal if it contains less than 0.3 percent Delta 9 THC by weight. Delta 8, a hemp CBD derivative, is therefore legal under federal law, following a recent federal appeals court ruling.
Delta 8 Effects
Many people have dubbed Delta 8 “diet weed” because its effects are so similar to the marijuana-based cannabinoid, Delta 9 THC. It’s true that D8 and D9 are similar in structure, varying only by the location of a one double bond. Some suggest that it is this slight chemical structure difference that makes the element less potent or intense than D9.
Nevertheless, Delta 8’s psychoactivity is similar to a standard “marijuana high.” For example, some report that D8 makes them feel relaxed and euphoric with a slight head and body buzz. Others state that the substance heightens sensory perception. This may make music more exciting, colors more vivid, or physical contact more stimulating.
Notably, though the Delta 8 experience is not as intense as a marijuana high, the duration closely compares. Generally, a D8 experience lasts for about an hour or two to upwards of five hours or more. However, much of this depends on dose and consumption method. Fortunately, CBD may help lessen the intensity of a D8 high should overconsumption occur.
